Diet- restrict oneself to small amounts or special kinds of food in order to lose weight.

We all know someone’s who attempted a diet. Some succeed, most fail. I believe the failure has to do with making short-lived changes that simply aren’t sustainable.

This is exactly what most marketing/advertising companies do when it comes to helping businesses (us included). We put you on a reverse diet where you pump lots of money into a campaign to advertise the same service/business and though there may be some preliminary successes, it’s not sustainable. Just like no person wants to be on a diet forever, companies can’t spend excessive amounts of marketing dollars forever. (and expect it to work)

So what are we to do?

Those that have had success beyond diets will tell you that it’s a lifestyle change. It’s simply not restricting yourself on foods and portions, but a holistic approach that considers the balance between food, sleep, and exercise. Marketing is much the same.

Instead of pumping tons of dollars into ongoing campaigns of radio, TV, internet, newspaper, etc. consider more organic approaches- great customer service, great processes, great products, great work culture, and great leadership. Pretty much anything that doesn’t fall into “great” needs to be re-evaluated. Why does this matter? Because in this day and age we have services like Yelp, Google+, Angie’s List, Facebook, etc. where consumers will voice their opinions and a evaluation from a complete stranger goes much farther than any TV ad you can produce.

What does that mean for me?

Just so we’re clear, we’re not anti TV, Radio, Internet, and Newspaper advertising. These things may actually be useful and complementary in certain situations, in fact. The point we’re trying to get across is your marketing shouldn’t simply be limited to these things. If you want to increase your chances of having great success, invest your dollars back into your business and methods that may generate more organic leads.
